One of the Oldest Independent Republican Clubs
Southern California Republican Women is one of the oldest independent Republican Clubs in California and Los Angeles County. The Club was founded by political activist and distinguished lecturer Louise Ward Watkins in 1935.
Mrs Watkins stated objective was to provide a suitable venue for Republican women to meet and talk about political matters and thereby increase their personal knowledge and general effectiveness in the political process.
Though founded in 1935 as a women's organization, the club has been open for membership to both men and women since a bylaw change in 1988 which changed the clubs name to Southern California Republican Women and Men (SCRW&M). The sole requirement for membership is that the applicant must be a registered Republican committed to doing whatever they can to strengthen the Republican Party in Southern California.
The Purposes of Southern California Republican Women & Men as contained in the current Bylaws are as follows:
- To work to maintain and preserve the Constitution of the United States of America.
- To promote greater appreciation of our American heritage.
- To support the Republican Party.
- To promote a wider knowledge of the principles of our government.
- to encourage active participation in political affairs on the local, state and national levels.
- To cooperater with other Republican groups in the election of Republican candidates for office, provided the organizations and candidates have the same objectives as Southern California Republican Women.
As an independent club, Southern California Republican Women & Men can and often does make pre-primary endorsements. The Club has, from time to time, made financial contributions to selected candidate's campaigns and frequently does major mailing to help get out the vote for the candidates the Club has endorsed.
In the Club's continuing efforts to promote political knowledge and encourage effective participation in all livels of government, the club conducts a Political Forum prior to each luncheon for those who are interested in keeping informed and up to date on current political affairs and compaigns. Each monthly Luncheon features an outstanding guest speaker who provides timely information which is of benefit to concerned voters and citizens of Southern California.
